The winner of a world-famous television gameshow is a "criminal" ? It sounds quite paradoxical, yet Ram Mohammad Thomas - a waiter at a small restaurant in India - fell into such wobbly situation.
A poor, conventional childhood and unexpected events which were inevitable made this guy harbor a dream of changing his life. And "Who wants to be a millionaire?" is what he is fighting hard to win at.
How could a waiter have enough knowledge to win the hardest television show in history? What's more was that his background comes from the poor, dark slums where the needy children grew up. This was a challenge.
If I said that Thomas won by luck, what would you think? Indeed, the 12 questions throughout the program related to his experiences in life. His life flowed from the slums to the Catholic church, to the chawl of a noble family; from waiter to maid, to mercenary, to tour guide,... All brought him valuable lessons and unforgettable memories. And above all, every single event, every person he met, all the things he went through were briefly summed up to: “Dreams have power over our heads. And money has power over other people's heads. ”
Because he was the first and only winner of this gameshow, people accused him of cheating, forced him to go to jail for interrogation, and of course, the award was gone. And, fortunately, a young female lawyer defended him, for no reason at all. He recounted everything he met, how he knew the answers to those questions ... The perseverance and effort of the lawyer helped Thomas become a clean man. In the end, he realized that the female lawyer herself was the one he had encountered by fate since adolescence, a person he did not think he would have the chance to meet again.
Vikas Swarup wrote "Slumdog Millionaire" with his own experience with the message: Everything in the world can come true if our dream is big enough.
A slum dweller can also achieve his dream of becoming a billionaire, so why can't you?
